Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice: online appointments, hours, prescriptions and local patient routes
Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice is at Spa Medical Centre, 50 Old Jamaica Road, London, SE16 4BN. The practice telephone is 020 3474 6000. Since 29 September 2025, care navigators no longer directly book routine appointments over the phone: patients are asked to submit appointment, repeat-medication and fit-note requests through the practice online form or NHS App, with telephone support if they have difficulty using the digital route.
Use this number when you need help completing the online request, have an urgent problem during normal opening, need reception support, want to request a home visit, need an interpreter or reasonable adjustment, or are unsure which Bermondsey Spa service you should use.

Appointment system changed on 29 September 2025
This is the key workflow change to understand. The official appointment page says: from 29 September 2025, care navigators no longer directly book routine appointments over the phone.
For a routine GP or nurse request, open the official online consultation route or use your NHS account. The NHS App route is: Appointments → Book an appointment → Ask about a health problem.
The practice uses the information you provide to direct you to the most appropriate professional or service. A brief but specific description is more useful than writing only “need a doctor”.
The current appointment page says routine requests will be dealt with within 24 hours / one working day. Keep your telephone and NHS App notifications available for the reply.
The practice specifically says patients having trouble should still call 020 3474 6000 for support. Reception remains open for in-person assistance during surgery hours.
Routine appointments can be booked ahead
The practice says routine appointments may be arranged in advance, up to around four weeks, subject to availability. Normal GP appointments are published as 10 minutes. Make a separate appointment for each family member who needs care.
Can I choose a particular doctor?
Yes. The practice states that patients can ask for the doctor of their choice, although waiting longer may be necessary if that doctor has limited availability.
Online requests: one working day versus two working days
Two response timings appear on different official practice pages, and they apply to slightly different request contexts.
Appointment requests
The appointment page says GP/nurse, repeat-medication and fit-note requests submitted through the new workflow are dealt with within 24 hours / one working day.
Broader online/admin requests
The general Online Services page says submitted queries may receive a response within 2 working days, often sooner, by phone, email or NHS App message.
Email is no longer the patient-query route
From 16 June 2025, Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice says it no longer accepts patient query emails. Use its online request form, NHS App, telephone or reception instead.
Enhanced Access: extra appointments in the same Spa Medical Centre
North Southwark Primary Care Network contracts Quay Health Solutions to run an Enhanced Access Service from Spa Medical Centre. It is an extension of local GP care, not the same reception/service as Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice.
GP access
Enhanced Access currently lists GP appointments Monday to Saturday 8:00am–8:00pm and Sunday 8:00am–4:00pm.
Nursing care
Published services include cervical screening, child immunisation, selected travel vaccinations, wound care, NHS health checks, blood-pressure reviews and seasonal vaccinations.
Physiotherapy
After referral from your GP practice, the service can provide a First Contact Physiotherapist appointment for suitable musculoskeletal problems.
How the first GP appointment is booked
The Enhanced Access reception does not normally book the initial GP appointment directly. Your GP practice or NHS 111 books it after assessment. The Enhanced Access number can be used for an existing booked appointment and for specified services such as contraception.
Home visits: call before 10am for same-day consideration
The practice says home visits are normally intended for patients who are elderly, housebound, terminally ill or would come to serious harm if moved. They are not an automatic alternative because transport is difficult or inconvenient.
For an urgent same-day home-visit request, the official page asks patients to call before 10:00am.
A triage nurse or doctor may phone to assess the request and decide whether home care, a surgery appointment or another service is safer.
The practice explicitly says there is no automatic right to a home visit. Requests are medically assessed.
Repeat prescriptions: allow two working days
Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice says patients should allow 2 working days to request the prescription and collect their medicine. Routine repeat requests are not accepted by phone or email for patient-safety reasons.
| Prescription route | Current practice guidance |
|---|---|
| NHS App / NHS account | View repeat medicines, choose what you need and nominate/change a pharmacy. |
| Practice online form | Choose the admin-request option and provide the medicine name and dose. |
| Community pharmacy | Your pharmacy may help manage repeat ordering and can advise about medicines. |
| Phone | Routine repeat orders are not accepted by phone. |
| Routine repeat orders are not accepted by email. |
Electronic Repeat Dispensing
Patients taking stable regular medicines may be suitable for electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD). This lets the GP send a series of prescriptions electronically to the nominated pharmacy, reducing the need to request every issue individually.
For broader help with repeat medicines, nominated pharmacies and medication reviews, see the MedicalPracticeUK medication guide.
Test results: who ordered the test matters
The practice asks patients to wait for the expected result period given when the test was arranged, then contact the surgery or use online-record access where appropriate.
Different tests take different lengths of time. Calling immediately after a sample is collected will not make the laboratory process faster.
Use the surgery result route, NHS App or practice contact once enough time has passed. Identity checks apply before information is released.
The practice tells patients to contact the clinic or hospital that requested it. The specialist who ordered the test is usually best placed to explain the result and next step.
Register with Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice
The practice says it is open to patients who live within its Southwark practice boundary. Use its postcode checker before submitting the registration form.
Registration is based on the practice catchment area. Do not complete the full form until you know your address is eligible.
Choose either the NHS online registration service or the paper form. The practice specifically asks patients not to submit duplicate registrations.
The official registration page confirms you do not need proof of address, immigration status, photo ID or an NHS number to use the NHS online GP registration service.
The practice says homeless patients or people of no fixed abode can register if they reside within the practice boundary.
Hospital referrals: do not call the GP for your waiting-list position
Once the hospital receives the referral, its specialist team prioritises when you should be seen. Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice explicitly says the GP surgery does not know where an individual patient is on the hospital waiting list and cannot change the consultant’s prioritisation.
Check average waiting times
Use NHS My Planned Care to view average waiting information for the hospital or specialty where you have been referred.
Already have a hospital booking?
Contact the hospital directly to book, change or cancel it. If you are receiving care from Guy’s and St Thomas’, the practice also points patients towards the hospital’s MyChart service.
Local services that may be quicker than a routine GP appointment
Bermondsey Spa promotes direct access to other healthcare professionals where appropriate. This is especially useful for minor illness, musculoskeletal problems, eye problems, dental problems and social support.
Pharmacy First
Community pharmacists can assess and treat a range of common minor illnesses and medicine problems. The practice also links to a Southwark Pharmacy First Plus route.
Physiotherapy
Suitable musculoskeletal problems may be directed to physiotherapy or the Enhanced Access First Contact Physiotherapist rather than a routine GP appointment.
Social prescribing
Registered Southwark adults aged 18+ can be referred to social-prescribing link workers for support with housing, benefits, loneliness, employment, wellbeing, bereavement, low mood and community activities.
Maternity
The practice publishes a direct maternity booking number: 020 3299 8131, open 9:00am–3:00pm. It also links patients to Guy’s and St Thomas’ maternity self-referral.
Travel clinic
The practice says travel-health appointments should be arranged at least 6 weeks before travel where possible. It is also listed as a designated Yellow Fever Centre.
Vaccination
The practice promotes seasonal vaccination, childhood immunisation and other NHS vaccination routes, with some additional vaccination appointments available through Enhanced Access.
Accessibility: step-free care, Blue Badge bays, BSL and interpreters
The practice publishes unusually useful access information for the building and communication support.
Physical access
- Step-free access into the surgery.
- All patient areas are on the ground floor.
- Wheelchair-accessible waiting and consultation areas.
- Accessible ground-floor toilet.
- Baby-changing facility.
- Blue Badge parking bays in front of the premises.
Communication access
- Telephone interpreter / Language Line can be used during appointments.
- In-person interpreters can be arranged where needed.
- BSL users can use the NHS England InterpretersLive video service.
- The contact page currently lists BSL video interpreting Monday–Friday, 9:00am–4:30pm.
Complaints and patient feedback
You can complain directly to the practice about its service or use the current commissioner route for primary-care complaints. The practice notes that commissioner complaints moved from NHS England to the local Integrated Care Board from July 2023.
Time limit
The practice says a complaint should normally be made within 12 months of the event, or within 12 months of when you first became aware of the issue.
Independent advocacy
The practice lists POhWER as a source of independent local advocacy support for people who need help expressing concerns or navigating services.
Current CQC rating: Good — old “Inadequate” results are archived history
Search results for this practice can be confusing because older CQC pages from a previous provider still exist. The current CQC profile is for Dr B Bhatti & Dr R Das, also known as Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice. CQC currently displays Good overall.
| CQC area | Current rating |
|---|---|
| Overall | Good |
| Safe | Good |
| Effective | Good |
| Caring | Good |
| Responsive | Good |
| Well-led | Good |
The current CQC overview lists the report as published on 13 June 2023. CQC then reviewed available data again on 6 July 2023 and said it had not found evidence requiring reassessment of the rating at that stage.
