Bow Medical Practice | NHS GP Appointments & Hours

Emergency first: MedicalPracticeUK.org is an independent patient-information website, not Bow Medical Practice, NHS Devon, NHS 111 or the Care Quality Commission. Call 999 for a life-threatening emergency. If the practice is closed and you need urgent medical help that is not life-threatening, use NHS 111 online or call 111.
Current Bow updates: the practice moved from EMIS to the new Medicus clinical record system on 20 July 2026. It has also installed a new 24/7 medication collection pod, but the August 2026 practice notice said software setup was still being completed before patients could register to use it. Do not travel expecting pod collection until the practice confirms that your medicine has actually been placed in the pod and sends you a PIN.

You need Best first route What happens next
Life-threatening emergency Call 999 Do not wait for the practice or an online response.

No internet access Call the Patient Services Team. Staff can submit an online request on your behalf.

How Bow Medical Practice appointments work

The practice separates urgent same-day problems from routine requests, but both routes are clinically reviewed rather than simply allocating every patient to the first GP slot.

1
If you need to be seen today, phone or visit.
The Patient Services Team records the details of your health concern and sends them for doctor review.
2
The GP chooses the most appropriate same-day clinician.
Depending on the issue, this may be an Advanced Clinical Practitioner, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, First Contact Practitioner, mental-health service or GP.
3
Routine request? Use the online consultation service.
You can explain the problem in your own words and, where appropriate, attach a photograph such as a non-sensitive skin image.
4
Expect clinical routing, not necessarily a GP face-to-face appointment.
Following review, Bow may offer a telephone consultation, face-to-face consultation or another service that is better matched to the problem.

Pre-bookable GP telephone appointments

Bow publishes daily pre-bookable GP telephone appointments for ongoing care. These can be booked through the NHS App or Patient Services Team and are available up to 2 weeks ahead.

Face-to-face care

The practice says face-to-face appointments are available every morning and afternoon for patients who need to be examined in person.

Nursing appointments

Advanced Practice Nurse, Practice Nurse and Healthcare Assistant appointments are bookable daily and can be available up to 4 weeks ahead. Planned-care appointments such as 6-week maternal checks, 8-week baby checks and some medicals can be booked directly through the Patient Services Team.

Online consultations are now available throughout the day

Bow’s current appointment page says its online consultation service is available throughout the day and has become a major route for routine patient requests.

Medical request

Describe symptoms or concerns in your own words. A GP or healthcare professional with the right skills reviews the request.

Administration

The online route can also be used for general advice, medication queries, letters, form-related administration and other suitable non-urgent tasks.

Response target

The practice says it aims to respond within 2 working days. High demand can sometimes mean routine enquiries take longer.

No internet?

The Patient Services Team can submit an online consultation request on your behalf.

Do not wait online if the problem needs urgent same-day assessment. Phone the practice or attend in person. Call 999 for life-threatening emergencies.
July 2026 system migration: Bow moved its underlying clinical record from EMIS to Medicus. The practice advises patients to use the NHS App for records, repeat prescriptions and messages and says more future communication will use the NHS App or email.

Evening appointments at Bow

Bow provides its own pre-booked evening appointments on Monday and Friday from 6:30pm to 8:00pm.

Monday evening

The practice currently lists in-person consultations and telephone reviews with a doctor or nurse.

Friday evening

The practice currently lists a doctor telephone-consultation service.

These are pre-booked extended-access appointments, not a walk-in urgent-care service. Wider evening and weekend appointments can also operate across Mid Devon Healthcare network practices.

Home visits: request before 11:00am

Bow provides home visits for patients who are housebound or genuinely too ill to be moved safely to the surgery.

1
Call 01363 82333 before 11:00am.
Explain the main problem and why attending the surgery is not possible.
2
The request is clinically assessed.
Home visiting is not automatically provided simply because transport is inconvenient.
3
Typical visit period is 1:00pm–3:00pm.
Bow says home visits are generally made during this period each day, although urgent clinical priorities can alter timing.
For immediate life-threatening deterioration, do not wait for a GP home visit. Call 999.

Repeat prescriptions after the Medicus move

Bow offers several repeat-prescription routes and is also a dispensing practice. The current dedicated prescription page is more useful than the older downloadable practice leaflet because the prescribing and clinical systems have changed since that leaflet was produced.

Ordering route Current Bow guidance
NHS App Secure repeat ordering from your current repeat-medication list. The practice strongly promotes this route after its Medicus migration.
Bow online prescription form Use the prescription request form from the official website.
Written request Drop the repeat slip or a written note into the surgery.
Email Send a written request to d-icb.BowMedicalPracticePrescriptions@nhs.net with full name, date of birth and each medication required.
Automatic dispensing Suitable patients can ask the dispensary about having regular medication prepared each month without submitting a new monthly order.
Telephone order Not offered routinely. Telephone medication ordering is reserved for housebound and high-priority patients.
No current universal processing promise is published on the live prescription page. An older practice leaflet said three working days, but Bow has since moved to Medicus and changed its dispensing setup. This guide therefore does not present the old three-day figure as a guaranteed current turnaround.

For broader information about repeat medicines and medication reviews, see the Medication Practices guide.

Bow dispensary: hours, enquiries and the new 24/7 pod

Bow is a rural dispensing practice. This means eligible patients can have medicines dispensed directly through the surgery rather than always collecting an NHS prescription from a separate community pharmacy.

Dispensary route Current detail
Monday–Friday 8:00am–12:00 noon and 2:00pm–6:30pm.
Protected processing time 12:00 noon–2:00pm. The dispensary closes to routine collection while hospital/community requests and complex specialist medicines are processed.
Controlled drugs Collect 8:00am–12:00 noon or 2:00pm–5:30pm.
Enquiry line 01363 82333 option 2, open 8:00am–10:00am and 3:30pm–5:30pm Monday to Friday.
Friday afternoon The practice says this is particularly busy and asks patients to avoid routine collection then where possible.

24/7 medication collection pod

Bow announced in August 2026 that the physical installation of a new 24/7 medication collection pod had been completed. At that point, the software setup was still being finalised.

Once the practice activates the service for you, the published plan is:

  • the dispensary places your medication in the pod;
  • you receive a unique PIN by text;
  • you can collect the medicine outside normal dispensary hours;
  • medication must be collected within 48 hours of being placed in the pod because storage space is limited;
  • uncollected medicine is removed and returned to the normal dispensary.
Do not use the pod until Bow confirms your registration and sends the collection PIN. Installation alone does not mean every patient can already use it.

Test results: wait for doctor review first

Bow says it will contact you if your result shows that you need further tests or treatment.

1
Wait for the result to be reviewed.
Different tests have different laboratory and reporting times, so there is no single fixed turnaround published for every investigation.
2
Check your NHS account when available.
Once a doctor has reviewed the result, you may be able to view it through the NHS website or NHS App.
3
You can also phone or visit Bow.
Ask whether the result is back and whether any clinical follow-up has been advised.
4
Hospital consultant ordered it?
Contact the clinic or hospital directly. Bow specifically says it cannot action tests requested by clinicians outside the practice.
Confidentiality: the practice releases results to the patient unless permission has been given to share them or the patient is not capable of understanding the result.

Register with Bow Medical Practice

Bow’s official registration page says the practice has an open list, and NHS currently also shows the surgery as accepting new patients.

1
Check that you live in the practice area.
Bow says people living within its practice area can request registration. Out-of-area applications may only be considered where there are individual special circumstances.
2
Use the online registration route where convenient.
The practice provides online registration from its official new-patient page.
3
Prefer paper?
A new-patient welcome pack and registration forms can be collected from reception.
4
Protect your medication supply when moving practice.
Have your current medicines and repeat information available so the new practice can reconcile records safely after registration.
Current NHS guidance says everyone in England can register with a GP for free. A permanent address is not required, and lack of ID should not by itself prevent routine GP registration.

Clinical team and services: not every problem needs a GP

Bow’s current appointment page shows why reception asks patients what they need help with: several professionals can assess and treat appropriate problems.

Advanced clinicians

Urgent same-day requests may be routed to an Advanced Clinical Practitioner or Advanced Nurse Practitioner where suitable.

First Contact Practitioner

Some musculoskeletal problems can be directed straight to an advanced physiotherapy practitioner through the Mid Devon Healthcare Primary Care Network.

Mental health services

The practice lists mental-health support among the possible routes available through clinical review.

Practice nurses

The nursing team provides chronic-disease management, contraception advice, health screening, childhood immunisations, vaccinations and complex wound management.

Nursing assistants

Support can include phlebotomy, NHS health checks, wound care, ECGs, smoking-cessation advice, vaccinations and assistance with minor procedures.

Community maternity

Community midwifery support is linked with Okehampton Community Hospital, including postnatal visits for new mothers.

Bow’s “Who do I see?” directory also sends some minor conditions directly to community pharmacy or another service. Using the right professional can be faster than waiting specifically for a GP.

For another Devon GP access model, see the Seaton and Colyton Medical Practice guide.

Accessibility, disabled parking and hearing support

The current Bow contact page gives unusually detailed accessibility information.

Bow building access

  • Modern purpose-built premises.
  • Level access from the car park.
  • Single-storey building.
  • Wide access doors and corridors.
  • Disabled parking bays at the entrance.

Inside the practice

  • Disabled toilet facilities.
  • Handrails.
  • Call points if assistance is needed.
  • Hearing loop at reception.
  • Portable hearing loops that can move through the practice with the patient.
If you have a sight or hearing difficulty, tell reception so appropriate help can be arranged. The practice also recognises that some patients need an assistance dog during their appointment.

Complaints, suggestions and the Patient Participation Group

Bow invites both formal complaints and practical suggestions about how the service operates.

Complaint or suggestion

The practice provides a complaints leaflet through reception and publishes patient feedback resources. For a formal concern, contact the practice and ask for the current complaints procedure rather than posting confidential clinical information publicly.

Patient Participation Group

The PPG represents patients from Bow, North Tawton and surrounding villages and hamlets. It discusses practice services, patient suggestions, health education, local self-help projects and wider health and social-care issues.
