Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice | NHS GP Surgery Spa

Emergency first: MedicalPracticeUK.org is an independent information website, not Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice, Quay Health Solutions, the NHS or CQC. Call 999 for a life-threatening medical or mental-health emergency. For urgent medical help that is not life-threatening, use NHS 111 online or call 111.
Current autumn 2026 vaccination notice: the practice is currently promoting NHS flu and COVID-19 vaccination for eligible patients. Some eligible pregnant women and children could receive flu vaccine from 1 September 2026; most eligible adults aged 65+ and adults aged 18–64 with qualifying health conditions can receive flu vaccination from 1 October 2026. Autumn 2026 COVID-19 vaccination appointments also start from 1 October 2026 for eligible groups. The practice says eligible patients can book through NHS routes now for an eligible vaccination date.

Fast answer: Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice is at 50 Old Jamaica Road, London, SE16 4BN, phone 020 3474 6000. The surgery is normally open Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 6:30pm and closed at weekends. Routine GP and nurse requests should now start through the online form or NHS App; the practice says appointment requests are dealt with within 24 hours / one working day. More general online administrative requests may be answered within 2 working days.

Important: Spa Medical Centre hosts three different NHS services

This is one of the most useful details for patients visiting 50 Old Jamaica Road. The building is not used only by Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice.

Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice

Your registered GP practice if you are on the Bermondsey Spa patient list. Main phone: 020 3474 6000.

Enhanced Access Service

A North Southwark overflow service run by Quay Health Solutions for patients from participating GP practices. It provides additional GP, nurse, physiotherapy and contraception appointments.

QHS GP Care Home Service

A separate GP service for residents of specified Southwark nursing and residential care homes. It is not the standard GP reception for Bermondsey Spa patients.

Check the service name when you arrive. A text saying “Spa Medical Centre” does not by itself tell you which reception/service is expecting you.

Start with the task you actually need

The practice has changed how routine appointments and administrative requests are handled. Using the correct route avoids waiting on the phone only to be redirected to an online form.

You need Best first step What to expect
Life-threatening emergency Call 999. Do not wait for an online reply or GP callback.
Routine GP or nurse appointment Use the practice online form or NHS App. The practice says appointment requests are handled within 24 hours / one working day.
Cannot use the online form Call 020 3474 6000. The practice says patients having trouble should phone for support.
Repeat medicine Use NHS App, the practice online form or your pharmacy. Allow 2 working days for the prescription request and medicine collection process.
Fit note Use NHS App or the practice online form. Care navigators no longer routinely book this by phone.
Home visit Call reception before 10am where possible. The request is medically assessed before a home visit is agreed.
Hospital referral update Use My Planned Care / NHS e-Referral or contact the hospital. The GP practice cannot control your position on a hospital waiting list.
Urgent help when closed Use NHS 111 online or call 111. NHS 111 can direct or book you into appropriate urgent care.

If you want a broader explanation of NHS GP booking, registration and care navigation, see the MedicalPracticeUK NHS GP patient guide.

Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice opening hours

Day Normal practice hours Patient note
Monday 8:00am–6:30pm Online form and phone support available during normal practice access.
Tuesday 8:00am–6:30pm Routine weekday access.
Wednesday 8:00am–6:30pm Keep NHS App notifications enabled after sending a request.
Thursday 8:00am–6:30pm Third Thursday each month has a temporary PLT closure from 12:30pm–4:30pm.
Friday 8:00am–6:30pm Order regular medicine early before weekends.
Saturday Closed Enhanced Access may still offer booked care in the same building.
Sunday Closed Enhanced Access and NHS 111 provide separate routes.
Protected Learning Time: the surgery currently closes on the third Thursday of every month from 12:30pm to 4:30pm. Phone lines are switched off during that period. For an urgent problem before the practice reopens at 4:30pm, the official contact page directs patients to the out-of-hours service on 020 3883 1623 or NHS 111.

Appointment system changed on 29 September 2025

This is the key workflow change to understand. The official appointment page says: from 29 September 2025, care navigators no longer directly book routine appointments over the phone.

1
Use the online form or NHS App first.
For a routine GP or nurse request, open the official online consultation route or use your NHS account. The NHS App route is: Appointments → Book an appointment → Ask about a health problem.
2
Describe what you need help with.
The practice uses the information you provide to direct you to the most appropriate professional or service. A brief but specific description is more useful than writing only “need a doctor”.
3
Appointment requests have a one-working-day target.
The current appointment page says routine requests will be dealt with within 24 hours / one working day. Keep your telephone and NHS App notifications available for the reply.
4
Phone if the online route is difficult.
The practice specifically says patients having trouble should still call 020 3474 6000 for support. Reception remains open for in-person assistance during surgery hours.

Routine appointments can be booked ahead

The practice says routine appointments may be arranged in advance, up to around four weeks, subject to availability. Normal GP appointments are published as 10 minutes. Make a separate appointment for each family member who needs care.

Can I choose a particular doctor?

Yes. The practice states that patients can ask for the doctor of their choice, although waiting longer may be necessary if that doctor has limited availability.

Online requests: one working day versus two working days

Two response timings appear on different official practice pages, and they apply to slightly different request contexts.

Appointment requests

The appointment page says GP/nurse, repeat-medication and fit-note requests submitted through the new workflow are dealt with within 24 hours / one working day.

Broader online/admin requests

The general Online Services page says submitted queries may receive a response within 2 working days, often sooner, by phone, email or NHS App message.

Practical rule: if the request is clinically urgent, do not rely on a generic two-day administrative response window. Use the correct urgent practice, NHS 111 or emergency route.

Email is no longer the patient-query route

From 16 June 2025, Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice says it no longer accepts patient query emails. Use its online request form, NHS App, telephone or reception instead.

Enhanced Access: extra appointments in the same Spa Medical Centre

North Southwark Primary Care Network contracts Quay Health Solutions to run an Enhanced Access Service from Spa Medical Centre. It is an extension of local GP care, not the same reception/service as Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice.

GP access

Enhanced Access currently lists GP appointments Monday to Saturday 8:00am–8:00pm and Sunday 8:00am–4:00pm.

Nursing care

Published services include cervical screening, child immunisation, selected travel vaccinations, wound care, NHS health checks, blood-pressure reviews and seasonal vaccinations.

Physiotherapy

After referral from your GP practice, the service can provide a First Contact Physiotherapist appointment for suitable musculoskeletal problems.

How the first GP appointment is booked

The Enhanced Access reception does not normally book the initial GP appointment directly. Your GP practice or NHS 111 books it after assessment. The Enhanced Access number can be used for an existing booked appointment and for specified services such as contraception.

Enhanced Access telephone: 020 3883 1620. For a new GP Enhanced Access appointment, start with Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice or NHS 111 rather than assuming this number works as a walk-in booking line.

Home visits: call before 10am for same-day consideration

The practice says home visits are normally intended for patients who are elderly, housebound, terminally ill or would come to serious harm if moved. They are not an automatic alternative because transport is difficult or inconvenient.

1
Call reception as early as possible.
For an urgent same-day home-visit request, the official page asks patients to call before 10:00am.
2
Give a working contact number.
A triage nurse or doctor may phone to assess the request and decide whether home care, a surgery appointment or another service is safer.
3
Do not expect automatic approval.
The practice explicitly says there is no automatic right to a home visit. Requests are medically assessed.
Critical condition? If someone has a life-threatening problem, call 999 rather than waiting for a GP home visit. The practice may also arrange emergency hospital admission directly if that is clinically appropriate.

Repeat prescriptions: allow two working days

Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice says patients should allow 2 working days to request the prescription and collect their medicine. Routine repeat requests are not accepted by phone or email for patient-safety reasons.

Prescription route Current practice guidance
NHS App / NHS account View repeat medicines, choose what you need and nominate/change a pharmacy.
Practice online form Choose the admin-request option and provide the medicine name and dose.
Community pharmacy Your pharmacy may help manage repeat ordering and can advise about medicines.
Phone Routine repeat orders are not accepted by phone.
Email Routine repeat orders are not accepted by email.

Electronic Repeat Dispensing

Patients taking stable regular medicines may be suitable for electronic Repeat Dispensing (eRD). This lets the GP send a series of prescriptions electronically to the nominated pharmacy, reducing the need to request every issue individually.

Running out of medicine is not the normal ordering route. The practice warns that repeated urgent medication requests may be questioned and can be refused. If you unexpectedly run out of an important regular medicine, contact your usual pharmacy because an emergency supply may sometimes be available. Controlled drugs and antibiotics are excluded from the urgent-repeat service described by the practice.

For broader help with repeat medicines, nominated pharmacies and medication reviews, see the MedicalPracticeUK medication guide.

Test results: who ordered the test matters

The practice asks patients to wait for the expected result period given when the test was arranged, then contact the surgery or use online-record access where appropriate.

1
Wait for the expected processing time.
Different tests take different lengths of time. Calling immediately after a sample is collected will not make the laboratory process faster.
2
Practice-ordered test?
Use the surgery result route, NHS App or practice contact once enough time has passed. Identity checks apply before information is released.
3
Hospital-ordered test?
The practice tells patients to contact the clinic or hospital that requested it. The specialist who ordered the test is usually best placed to explain the result and next step.
Reception cannot clinically interpret a result. If the wording or numbers are unclear, ask what clinical follow-up is required rather than expecting reception to explain the medical meaning.

Register with Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice

The practice says it is open to patients who live within its Southwark practice boundary. Use its postcode checker before submitting the registration form.

1
Check your postcode.
Registration is based on the practice catchment area. Do not complete the full form until you know your address is eligible.
2
Use one registration method only.
Choose either the NHS online registration service or the paper form. The practice specifically asks patients not to submit duplicate registrations.
3
No ID is required simply to register.
The official registration page confirms you do not need proof of address, immigration status, photo ID or an NHS number to use the NHS online GP registration service.
4
No fixed address?
The practice says homeless patients or people of no fixed abode can register if they reside within the practice boundary.
Temporary registration: if you are away from your normal home and need GP care, the practice explains that temporary patient registration can last for up to 3 months.

Hospital referrals: do not call the GP for your waiting-list position

Once the hospital receives the referral, its specialist team prioritises when you should be seen. Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice explicitly says the GP surgery does not know where an individual patient is on the hospital waiting list and cannot change the consultant’s prioritisation.

Check average waiting times

Use NHS My Planned Care to view average waiting information for the hospital or specialty where you have been referred.

Already have a hospital booking?

Contact the hospital directly to book, change or cancel it. If you are receiving care from Guy’s and St Thomas’, the practice also points patients towards the hospital’s MyChart service.

Local services that may be quicker than a routine GP appointment

Bermondsey Spa promotes direct access to other healthcare professionals where appropriate. This is especially useful for minor illness, musculoskeletal problems, eye problems, dental problems and social support.

Pharmacy First

Community pharmacists can assess and treat a range of common minor illnesses and medicine problems. The practice also links to a Southwark Pharmacy First Plus route.

Physiotherapy

Suitable musculoskeletal problems may be directed to physiotherapy or the Enhanced Access First Contact Physiotherapist rather than a routine GP appointment.

Social prescribing

Registered Southwark adults aged 18+ can be referred to social-prescribing link workers for support with housing, benefits, loneliness, employment, wellbeing, bereavement, low mood and community activities.

Maternity

The practice publishes a direct maternity booking number: 020 3299 8131, open 9:00am–3:00pm. It also links patients to Guy’s and St Thomas’ maternity self-referral.

Travel clinic

The practice says travel-health appointments should be arranged at least 6 weeks before travel where possible. It is also listed as a designated Yellow Fever Centre.

Vaccination

The practice promotes seasonal vaccination, childhood immunisation and other NHS vaccination routes, with some additional vaccination appointments available through Enhanced Access.

Accessibility: step-free care, Blue Badge bays, BSL and interpreters

The practice publishes unusually useful access information for the building and communication support.

Physical access

  • Step-free access into the surgery.
  • All patient areas are on the ground floor.
  • Wheelchair-accessible waiting and consultation areas.
  • Accessible ground-floor toilet.
  • Baby-changing facility.
  • Blue Badge parking bays in front of the premises.

Communication access

  • Telephone interpreter / Language Line can be used during appointments.
  • In-person interpreters can be arranged where needed.
  • BSL users can use the NHS England InterpretersLive video service.
  • The contact page currently lists BSL video interpreting Monday–Friday, 9:00am–4:30pm.
Tell the practice before the appointment. If you need an interpreter, wheelchair support, a chaperone or another reasonable adjustment, give reception notice when the request is made.

Complaints and patient feedback

You can complain directly to the practice about its service or use the current commissioner route for primary-care complaints. The practice notes that commissioner complaints moved from NHS England to the local Integrated Care Board from July 2023.

Time limit

The practice says a complaint should normally be made within 12 months of the event, or within 12 months of when you first became aware of the issue.

Independent advocacy

The practice lists POhWER as a source of independent local advocacy support for people who need help expressing concerns or navigating services.

Current CQC rating: Good — old “Inadequate” results are archived history

Search results for this practice can be confusing because older CQC pages from a previous provider still exist. The current CQC profile is for Dr B Bhatti & Dr R Das, also known as Bermondsey Spa Medical Practice. CQC currently displays Good overall.

CQC area Current rating
Overall Good
Safe Good
Effective Good
Caring Good
Responsive Good
Well-led Good

The current CQC overview lists the report as published on 13 June 2023. CQC then reviewed available data again on 6 July 2023 and said it had not found evidence requiring reassessment of the rating at that stage.

Why old search results can mislead: an archived profile under the former provider Dr Shabir Bhatti shows historic Inadequate ratings from earlier years. CQC explicitly marks that old profile as archived and says the provider changed. Do not present the 2018 archived Inadequate rating as the practice’s current status.
CQC “Good” is not a star review. It is a regulator’s rating, so this article does not convert it into Review or AggregateRating structured data.
