Great Western Medical Practice Aberdeen: appointments, phone options, prescriptions and patient help
Great Western Medical Practice is an NHS Scotland GP practice on Seafield Road in west Aberdeen. Its patient-access system revolves around a four-option telephone menu, a separate prescription number, specific test-result times, GP Near Me video appointments where arranged, and NHS 24 when the surgery is closed.
Use this number for appointments, new or ongoing medical problems, home-visit requests, test-results access, registration questions, interpreter support and general reception help.

The official practice email is gram.greatwesternadministrator@nhs.scot. The practice specifically advises patients to use its feedback route rather than this medical-service email for complaints.
The four phone options: which one should you press?
This is the most important practical detail on the current Great Western website. Option 1 and Option 2 are not interchangeable.
The practice reserves this line for serious situations such as breathing difficulty, heart-attack-type symptoms, stroke, heavy bleeding, palliative-care emergencies or a severe allergic reaction.
If life is at risk, call 999. Do not use Option 1 simply because you want a same-day routine appointment.
Use this for appointments and enquiries about new or ongoing health problems that are not life-threatening.
Use this route if you cannot attend and want to be assessed for a possible home visit. The practice asks patients to call before 11:00am.
The results line is available from 11:00am–12:30pm and again from 1:30pm–3:00pm.

| Monday | 8:00am–6:00pm | Public-holiday dates can override normal opening. |
| Tuesday | 8:00am–6:00pm | Telephone, face-to-face and video appointments may operate during normal opening. |
| Wednesday | 8:00am–6:00pm | Use the correct phone option for your task. |
| Thursday | 8:00am–6:00pm | The practice asks non-urgent admin requests to be made after 10:00am where possible. |
| Friday | 8:00am–6:00pm | Order repeat medicine early rather than waiting until Friday. |
| Saturday | Closed | Phone 111 for urgent non-life-threatening help. |
| Sunday | Closed | Use 999 for a life-threatening emergency. |
Appointments: telephone, face-to-face and video
Great Western says it offers a mixture of telephone, face-to-face and video appointments between 8:00am and 6:00pm on weekdays. The right format depends on the reason for the appointment.
Use Option 2 for appointment requests and enquiries about non-life-threatening new or ongoing health problems.
Give enough information for the patient-navigation or reception team to direct you appropriately.
The practice may arrange a telephone, face-to-face or video appointment depending on the problem and current availability.
The practice specifically asks patients to tell the team when they cannot attend so the slot can be offered to somebody else.
Chaperone
You can take somebody into an appointment with you. If you want a chaperone but do not have somebody with you, ask reception whether a member of the team can act as one.
Unable to attend the practice? Use Option 3
If you are unable to attend the surgery and need to be seen, call 0345 337 0540 and use Option 3. The practice asks patients to call before 11:00am.
Calls received after 11:00am are passed to the emergency doctor for assessment. This does not mean every request automatically results in a home visit; the clinical team assesses what care is appropriate.
Repeat prescriptions: phone, online or pharmacy route
The practice allows repeat-prescription requests through the dedicated phone line, its online service, or by ticking the required medicines on the tear-off section of the repeat prescription and using the pharmacy route.
| Prescription question | Great Western guidance |
|---|---|
| Phone number | 01224 846746. |
| More than one patient? | Leave a separate phone message for each person. |
| Can I email the request? | No. The official prescription page says not to email prescription requests. |
| When will it reach the pharmacy? | The practice says the prescription should be ready at the pharmacy in four working days, although pharmacy workload can affect this. |
| Can I collect it from the surgery? | The current official page says prescriptions cannot be collected directly from the surgery. |
| Where does it go? | It can be sent to a nominated local pharmacy, or returned using a stamped addressed envelope supplied by the patient. |
The Medication Practices guide gives extra background on repeat medicines, medication reviews and pharmacy routes, but Great Western’s four-working-day and collection rules are specific to this practice.
Test results: Option 4 has two daily windows
If a result shows that you need further tests or treatment, the practice says it will contact you. Patients can also ask about results by calling the main number and selecting Option 4.
Morning result window
11:00am–12:30pm
Afternoon result window
1:30pm–3:00pm
Sick line / fit note requests
You do not normally need a doctor’s sickness certificate for an illness lasting seven days or less. The practice points patients to self-certification for that initial period.
If you need a doctor’s certificate for a longer period, Great Western provides an online sick-line request form.
For seven days or less, use the appropriate self-certification route required by your employer.
The form asks for patient details, whether the request is new or an extension, the reason for the request, occupation and the dates needed.
The practice says it aims to have the sick line ready for collection by 6:00pm on the fourth working day after submission.
Register with Great Western Medical Practice
Do not complete all the forms first and then discover that your postcode is outside the boundary. The practice asks prospective patients to call first to confirm their postcode is within the practice area.
Confirm that your address is inside the Great Western practice boundary.
The official page says each patient needs a GP registration form and a practice questionnaire. Separate adult and child forms are published.
The Patient Hub also provides an online-services registration form.
The practice currently asks patients to bring the completed forms together with photo ID and proof of address.
If Great Western is outside your boundary, the Albyn Medical Practice Aberdeen guide covers another Aberdeen GP practice and explains its own separate registration and appointment arrangements.
Other NHS routes that may save a GP appointment
The practice publishes several self-referral and community-service routes. These are useful when the problem fits that service and you do not need a GP referral first.
MSK physiotherapy
The practice links patients to NHS Grampian musculoskeletal physiotherapy self-help and self-referral information for suitable muscle and joint problems.
NHS Pharmacy First Scotland
For suitable minor illnesses, community pharmacies can provide advice, treatment where appropriate and referral onward when the problem needs another clinician.
Podiatry
The Great Western Patient Hub includes podiatry information and a self-referral form.
Home blood-pressure monitoring
The Patient Hub provides home blood-pressure instructions and a monitoring form for patients asked to submit readings.
Transport help through THInC
The Transport to Healthcare Information Centre provides practical transport advice for NHS Grampian appointments. Its published hours are 9:00am–4:30pm Monday to Friday.
THInC: 01224 665568 · travel@thinc-hub.org
GP Near Me video appointments
Great Western offers video appointments where the practice decides that a remote consultation is appropriate. Do not enter the virtual waiting room unless you have an actual appointment arranged with the practice.
GP Near Me is not a general drop-in video queue.
Use a private, well-lit location and a device with camera, microphone and stable internet access.
The official guidance says patients enter their name and date of birth before joining the virtual waiting area.
The clinician joins when ready. The official guidance notes that patients hear music while waiting for the connection.
Parking, translation and appointment support
Free patient parking
The official Great Western page states that a free car park is available for patients.
Local transport
The practice is in the Seafield area and says it is close to local bus routes, pharmacies and shops. THInC can help plan accessible or community transport.
Translation
Ask reception if you need translation support. The practice says the service is usually digital and may not be available immediately.
Chaperone
You may bring somebody into the consultation or ask reception whether a practice team member can act as a chaperone.
Feedback and complaints: do not use the medical email
The official practice page warns that its main service email is for medical use and that complaints or feedback sent there may not be actioned as quickly as they should be.
The practice suggests speaking to a receptionist, doctor, nurse or the Practice Manager as soon as you are aware of a problem.
The Great Western feedback page allows patients to select patient feedback, patient complaint or the friends-and-family-test route.
The practice’s complaints page lists the Scottish Public Services Ombudsman as the Scottish escalation route where appropriate.
Scotland quality note: do not apply an English CQC rating
Great Western Medical Practice is in Aberdeen, Scotland. It should not be given an English GP-style CQC “Good”, “Outstanding” or star rating simply because other UK practice pages use CQC information.
For current patient information on this surgery, the relevant sources are the official OneMedical Group practice pages, NHS 24, NHS inform and NHS Grampian services.
