Granta Medical Practices: appointments, six surgery sites, Accurx and patient help

Granta Medical Practices operates across six surgeries in South Cambridgeshire and North Hertfordshire: Sawston, Linton, Barley, Market Hill, Shelford and Royston. The important first step is to choose both the correct task and the correct site, because each surgery has its own phone option and opening pattern.

1. Choose your site
2. Contact or triage Phone the right option or use online consulting for a non-urgent request.
✓3. Right route Phone, face-to-face, home visit, nurse, pharmacist or another service.
Main Granta telephone

Phone lines are listed as open Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 6:30pm. Use the site option that matches the surgery you need: Sawston 2, Linton 3, Barley 4, Market Hill 5, Shelford 6 and Royston 7.

Fast answer: Granta Medical Practices operates from Sawston Medical Centre, Linton Health Centre, Barley Surgery, Market Hill Surgery, Shelford Health Centre and Royston Health Centre. Call 0300 234 5555 and select options 2–7 for the appropriate surgery. For non-urgent medical or administrative requests, Granta’s online consulting service is available 8:00am–6:30pm Monday to Friday and the practice says requests are triaged within 24 hours of receipt.
Barley and Market Hill are different: the current Granta contact page specifically says these two sites do not provide on-the-day acute medical care. They are for pre-booked appointments.

Start here: choose the task before choosing the site

Granta is a large multi-site practice. For many requests, using the correct route matters more than travelling to the nearest reception desk.

You need Start here What happens next
Life-threatening emergency Call 999 Do not wait for a Granta form or GP callback.
Urgent clinician help during working hours Call 0300 234 5555. Use the option for your surgery and explain that the request is urgent.
Non-urgent medical advice Use Granta’s online consulting route. The practice says the trained triage team reviews requests within 24 hours.
Routine GP appointment Use NHS App, SystmOnline or phone your surgery option. Routine appointments are generally released 4–6 weeks ahead.
A home visit Call the practice. Granta’s ECP home-visiting service operates Monday–Friday 8:00am–6:00pm for suitable patients.
A repeat prescription Use NHS App or SystmOnline. Allow two clear working days between the request and collection.
A test result Use online record access or phone reception. Laboratory results can take up to seven working days, then need clinician review.
New-patient registration Choose the Granta surgery you want and check the catchment rules. Registration activation can take up to 14 days.
Urgent help when Granta is closed NHS 111 Use 999 instead if the situation is life-threatening.

If you are new to NHS primary care, the MedicalPracticeUK NHS GP patient guide explains the difference between GP appointments, pharmacy care, NHS 111, prescriptions and registration. Granta’s own instructions on this page should take priority for live local arrangements.

Choose the correct Granta surgery and phone option

All six sites use the same central number. The phone option determines which surgery team you reach.

Granta Medical Practices opening hours

Phone lines are listed as open Monday to Friday from 8:00am to 6:30pm. Building opening varies by surgery because some sites provide Enhanced Access outside core hours.

Bank holidays: Granta’s site pages state that surgery doors are not open on Bank Holidays. Check the live official contact page before travelling because Enhanced Access rotas can change.

Accurx online consulting: when to use it

For a non-urgent medical question or administrative request, Granta currently provides an online consulting tool based on Accurx Patient Triage. You do not need to download an app or create an Accurx account simply to submit the form.

1
Open Granta’s official contact or appointment page.
Use the online-consultation link from the practice website rather than searching for an unofficial form.
2
Choose whether the request is medical or administrative.
Explain one main problem clearly and provide an up-to-date contact number.
3
Submit during the published window.
Granta says the online service is available from 8:00am to 6:30pm Monday to Friday.
4
Keep your phone available.
The practice says the trained triage team reviews online requests within 24 hours of receipt. Weekend and Bank Holiday forms are not processed.
Do not use online consulting for an emergency. For urgent clinician contact during working hours, Granta tells patients to call 0300 234 5555. Use NHS 111 out of hours and 999 for life-threatening emergencies.

Online triage rules vary between practices. The Boultham Park Medical Practice Accurx guide is useful for understanding the technology, but Granta’s own response times and routing rules are the ones that apply here.

Routine, urgent, telephone and face-to-face appointments

Granta offers phone, online and reception booking routes. The practice says most appointments begin with a telephone conversation so the clinician can decide whether tests, ongoing phone care or a face-to-face appointment is the best next step.

Appointment need How Granta handles it
Urgent today Call 0300 234 5555 and select the appropriate surgery option. Reception asks for enough information to route you safely.
Routine appointment Routine appointments are generally available 4–6 weeks ahead, with new routine appointments released daily.
Telephone consultation Many appointments start by phone. Face-to-face follow-up can then be arranged when clinically appropriate.
Blood or cervical-screening appointment The practice says blood tests and smear tests must be booked with nurses.
Preferred clinician If the request is not urgent, tell reception if there is a particular clinician you would prefer to speak to.
Reception questions have a purpose. The practice explains that reception staff work to strict booking criteria. Sharing concise information helps them place you with the right professional, at the right place and time.

Home visits: Granta uses Emergency Care Practitioners

For housebound patients, Granta runs a home-visiting service using specially trained Emergency Care Practitioners. The service is published as operating 8:00am to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday.

Urgent home care

The ECP service may provide urgent assessment where a housebound patient cannot reasonably attend a Granta surgery.

Ongoing housebound care

Granta also describes the service as supporting investigations and ongoing care for housebound or care-home patients with long-term conditions.

Home-visiting clinicians normally work with their local site team but may cross-cover when needed. For a current home-visit request, call 0300 234 5555 rather than relying on a routine online form.

Repeat prescriptions: allow two clear working days

Granta says the easiest repeat-prescription route is online. The practice currently promotes the NHS App and SystmOnline, with written requests at the surgery also available.

1
Check exactly what is due.
Review the medicine name, strength and collection point before submitting the request.
2
Order through NHS App or SystmOnline where possible.
If you use the Granta website’s prescription service for the first time, the practice says reception can provide the required online-access details.
3
Allow two clear working days.
Granta specifically asks for two clear working days between ordering and collecting the prescription. Weekend online requests begin processing on Monday.
4
Add a note if ordering early.
If you need medicine earlier because of travel or a holiday, explain why in the medication-request notes.
Medication review due? Granta says that if a review prevents normal online ordering, patients can use the comments box to request the medicine and the Clinical Pharmacy team can arrange the review.

The MedicalPracticeUK repeat-medication guide explains NHS App ordering, medication reviews, nominated pharmacies and what to prepare before contacting a surgery.

Granta pharmacy and dispensary arrangements

Granta’s prescription service is unusual because dispensing arrangements vary by location. The official prescription page lists dispensary services at Sawston, Linton, Barley and Royston Health Centre.

Sawston dispensary

The Sawston Granta Dispensary says it dispenses to everyone and is not limited to registered Granta patients.

Other Granta dispensaries

Eligibility can depend on where you live. For example, Granta publishes distance-based dispensing rules for some rural sites such as Linton and Barley. Check the official prescription page rather than assuming every site uses the same rule.

Test results: allow laboratory time plus clinician review

Granta says laboratory results can take up to seven working days to return. The clinician who requested the test then has to read and interpret the result.

1
Use online access first where suitable.
Granta recommends SystmOnline and Airmid for viewing test results and other parts of the medical record.
2
Allow the test to return and be reviewed.
Seven working days is the practice’s published maximum general laboratory timeframe, not a guarantee for every test.
3
Reception can report the recorded outcome.
Reception can tell you if the recorded result is normal and whether further action is required, but staff cannot clinically interpret the result.
Hospital or community-service tests: Granta says it cannot report results for tests ordered by another service. If the hospital requested the test, contact the responsible hospital or community team.

Register with Granta Medical Practices

Granta provides a separate online registration option for each of its six surgery locations. Start by checking whether your circumstances meet the practice’s catchment rules and then select the site you want.

1
Check the practice catchment.
Permanent residents inside the catchment can register with access to Granta home visits.
2
Choose your surgery.
The official registration page provides individual online forms for Sawston, Linton, Shelford, Barley, Market Hill and Royston.
3
Submit the forms or use a registration pack.
If you do not want the online route, Granta says you can collect a registration pack from any of its surgeries and post the completed forms back.
4
Allow up to 14 days for activation.
Granta states that registration can take up to 14 days, after which NHS England transfers the medical record and confirms registration.
Regular medication? Do not wait until your current supply runs out. Granta asks new patients taking regular medicines to arrange clinical contact promptly after registration so repeat medication can be reviewed safely.

Out-of-area registration

Granta says some people may register from outside the normal catchment without home-visit access if, for example, they permanently work in the area, spend most of their time there because of caring responsibilities, are studying or training in the catchment, or qualify through a household family member.

Children under 16

The practice says a child under 16 cannot be registered unless at least one parent, carer or guardian is also registered. Its current registration guidance also asks for the child’s birth certificate when registering.

Services that go beyond a standard GP appointment

Granta’s scale allows the practice to publish several community and specialist services in addition to routine general practice. Access depends on clinical need, referral rules and current capacity.

Minor injuries

Granta says it can assess several minor injuries by telephone first and arrange face-to-face treatment when clinically appropriate.

Long-term conditions

The practice provides structured care for long-term conditions through GP, nursing, pharmacy and wider clinical teams.

Ear microsuction

A dedicated ear-microsuction service is included in Granta’s current services menu.

Community ultrasound

Granta lists a community ultrasound service intended to bring some diagnostic care closer to patients.

Community CT

The current services hub also lists community CT scanning. Referral criteria and location should be confirmed before attending.

Wellbeing and weight support

Granta publishes wellbeing and adult weight-management support among its current services.

Complaints, feedback and the Granta Patient Group

Formal complaint

Granta asks patients to raise concerns as soon as possible. The practice says a formal complaint should normally be made within 12 months of the incident or of discovering the problem.

Complaints can be sent to the Patient Liaison Team at cpicb.grantapatientservices@nhs.net or by post to the Sawston address.

Granta says it aims to acknowledge complaints within three working days and, depending on complexity, may take up to six weeks to investigate and respond fully.

Granta Patient Group

The former Patient Participation Group has been re-branded as the Granta Patient Group. The practice publishes 2026 meeting minutes and patient newsletters, and adult registered patients can take part.
