Burnbrae Medical Practice: askmyGP appointments, opening hours, prescriptions and two-site access
Burnbrae Medical Practice is an NHS Scotland GP practice with sites at Shotts Health Centre and Newmains Health Centre. This scan-first guide helps patients choose askmyGP, phone, Patient Services, pharmacy, home visit, temporary registration, NHS 24 or 999 without reading long paragraphs or landing on the wrong official page.
Shotts phone: 01501 822256
Newmains phone: 01698 384482
Out of hours: 111
Use phone when: you cannot use askmyGP, need reception help, need a home visit before 10am, need urgent guidance, need registration support, or you are unsure whether GP, pharmacy, NHS 24 or 999 is safest.

Decision hub: askmyGP, phone, pharmacy, NHS 24 or 999?
Use this first so the patient does not wait in the wrong route.
Call 999 now
Chest pain, stroke signs, severe breathing difficulty, collapse, severe bleeding, severe burns, seizure not stopping, severe allergic reaction, overdose, acute confusion, major injury or someone not responding.
Need GP/practice help
Use askmyGP from 8am to 12pm Monday to Friday. A senior clinician triages requests and prioritises clinical need.
Cannot use askmyGP
Phone reception. Patient Care Advisers may ask for a brief description so the GP team can decide how best to help.
Need repeat medicine
Use Patient Services or paper request route. Routine repeat requests are not taken by phone or email.
Common minor illness
Ask local pharmacy first where suitable. Burnbrae’s prescription page points patients to Pharmacy First for common conditions such as UTI, coughs/colds, diarrhoea and rashes.
Surgery closed
Call NHS 24 on 111 for urgent non-life-threatening help. Call 999 for life-threatening emergencies.
Shotts or Newmains: choose the correct Burnbrae site
Burnbrae Medical Practice operates from two health-centre sites. This is the main practical point for maps, registration, appointments and family members helping a patient travel.
| Site | Official details | Use this when |
|---|---|---|
| Shotts Health Centre | 36 Station Road, Shotts, North Lanarkshire, ML7 5DS. Phone 01501 822256. | Your appointment, form, map or letter says Shotts. |
| Newmains Health Centre | 17 Manse Road, Newmains, ML2 9AX. Phone 01698 384482. | Your appointment, registration instruction or call-back relates to Newmains. |
| burnbrae.medicalpractice@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk. | Use only where the official page/form allows email. Do not email emergency requests. | |
| Out of hours | NHS 24 on 111. | Urgent non-life-threatening help when practice is closed. |
Burnbrae Medical Practice opening hours
The official Burnbrae contact page lists weekday access and closed weekends. NHS 24’s listing also shows normal opening times for Burnbrae Practice as Monday to Friday, 08:00–18:00.
| Day / route | Listed access | Practical patient note |
|---|---|---|
| Monday | 8am–6pm / NHS 24 shows 08:00–18:00 | askmyGP is available 8am–12pm. |
| Tuesday | 8am–6pm / NHS 24 shows 08:00–18:00 | Use online route where possible to reduce phone pressure. |
| Wednesday | 8am–6pm / NHS 24 shows 08:00–18:00 | Keep phone available after submitting askmyGP. |
| Thursday | 8am–6pm / NHS 24 shows 08:00–18:00 | Order medication early if weekend is near. |

| Saturday/Sunday | Closed | Use NHS 24 on 111 for urgent non-emergency help. |
| askmyGP | 8am–12pm Monday to Friday | Use early; it may not be available outside those hours. |
Appointments: how Burnbrae wants patients to request help
The official homepage says the best way to get help is askmyGP. You enter your details as a patient, parent or carer, answer questions about the problem, and requests are triaged by a senior clinician.
If it is life-threatening, call 999. If urgent but not life-threatening and the practice is closed, use NHS 24 on 111.
Explain the problem clearly. A senior clinician triages requests and prioritises clinical need.
Patient Care Advisers may ask what the concern is so the GP team can decide the safest next step.
You may be directed to GP, Advanced Nurse Practitioner, mental health nurse, long-term-condition nurse, family-planning nurse, physiotherapist, pharmacist or pharmacy.
The old appointment guidance says missed appointments affect access and can trigger practice action after repeated DNA appointments.
Hello, my name is [name]. Date of birth: [date]. I am registered at Burnbrae Medical Practice. I need help with [one clear issue]. It started [when]. It is [getting worse/not improving]. I have tried [medicine/self-care]. I am worried because [reason]. Is this best for GP, nurse practitioner, mental health nurse, physiotherapist, pharmacist, NHS 24 or 999?
Who may help you: not every request needs a GP
The official appointment page lists several clinician roles and the types of problems they handle. This is useful because asking only for “a doctor” can slow down access when another clinician is more appropriate.
| Need | Official role listed | Practical action |
|---|---|---|
| Acute minor or major illness | Advanced Nurse Practitioners. | Use askmyGP and describe symptoms, severity and timing. |
| Mental health support | Nurse Practitioner for Mental Health. | Mention risk, sleep, appetite, crisis concerns and support already tried. |
| Long-term-condition review | Nurse Practitioner for Long Term Conditions. | Include readings, medicines and review due date. |
| Blood pressure, asthma, pre-diabetes | Long-term-condition nurse route. | Prepare home readings, inhaler list or previous results if you have them. |
| Cervical screening, HRT, contraception | Sexual Health and Family Planning Nurse Practitioner. | State whether it is screening, review, implant/coil or contraception advice. |
| Musculoskeletal problem | Advanced Practice Physiotherapists. | Explain pain site, injury, weakness, numbness and movement limits. |
| Medicines management / polypharmacy | General Practice Clinical Pharmacists. | Give medicine names, dose, side effects and what changed. |
Repeat prescriptions: Patient Services, paper request or pharmacy route
The official prescription page says the easiest way to order repeat prescriptions is Patient Services. It also says repeat requests are not taken over the phone or email, and pharmacy collection is usually 3–5 working days after ordering.
Patient Services
Best route if you are registered. It shows your repeat medicines and dosage so you can choose the items needed.
Paper request form
You can fill out a repeat prescription request form and bring the paper form to the surgery Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm.
Pharmacy preference
You need to choose a pharmacy to collect from. Burnbrae calls this your Pharmacy Preference and says you can change it at any time.
No routine phone/email ordering
The official page says the practice does not take repeat prescription requests over the phone or email.
| Prescription issue | Official detail | Best action |
|---|---|---|
| Routine repeat medicine | Use Patient Services, paper form or pharmacy-related request route. | Do not phone/email routine repeats. |
| Collection timing | Usually collect from pharmacy 3–5 working days after ordering. | Order before your final few doses. |
| Medicine question | Local pharmacist can answer medicine questions. | Ask pharmacist for side effects, OTC medicine and medicine-use advice. |
| Need to speak to practice about prescription | Submit an askmyGP request. | Include medicine name, dose, pharmacy and remaining supply. |
| Medication review | Practice may ask repeat-prescription patients to attend regular review. | Do not ignore review invitations; medicine may need safety checks. |
| Old medicines | Return to pharmacy or bring to surgery. Do not bin or flush. | Clear unused medicines safely. |
| Pharmacy First | Pharmacy can help with common conditions such as UTI, coughs/colds, diarrhoea and rashes. | Use pharmacy first where suitable. |
Patient Services: online prescription ordering steps
Burnbrae’s online prescription leaflet says Patient Services is the online service used for ordering medication. You need a registration letter from the practice before setting it up.
Complete the online prescription form and send it to the practice email, or ask reception for help.
The leaflet says you need Practice ID, Account ID and Linkage Key from the registration letter.
Use the details exactly as shown; the leaflet says they are case sensitive.
Log in, choose My Prescriptions, tick the repeat medications needed, then confirm the request.
The leaflet says you can request expired repeat medication or another medication using the message/request option, then confirm before sending.
Test results: askmyGP first, hospital tests go back to the hospital
The current services page says to submit an askmyGP request for test results. It also says if tests were requested by a hospital or clinic clinician, contact them directly for results and follow-up because it is their responsibility to carry out their treatment plan.
| Result issue | Best route | Practical tip |
|---|---|---|
| Practice-requested test | Submit askmyGP request. | Include test date, test type and where it was done. |
| Hospital/clinic-requested test | Contact the hospital or clinic directly. | They are responsible for their own treatment plan and follow-up. |
| Older practice leaflet timing | Previous leaflet says allow 7 days for receipt and processing, then phone after 2:30pm. | Use current askmyGP route first, but this timing helps set expectations. |
| Someone else asking | Permission/confidentiality checks may apply. | Arrange consent before a carer or family member contacts the practice. |
Sick notes / fit notes: 7-day rule
Burnbrae’s services page says to request a sick note if you have been sick for more than 7 days. The older sick-note guidance says you do not need a doctor’s sickness certificate for illness lasting 7 days or less.
| Situation | Route | Action |
|---|---|---|
| Off work 7 days or less | Self-certification. | Ask employer for SC2/self-certification route. |
| Off work more than 7 days | Request fit/sick note. | Use practice route and give exact dates. |
| Hospital treatment | Ask hospital clinician. | Hospital should usually provide evidence for care they manage. |
| Returning to work | Discuss with employer first. | GP “fit to return” letters are not usually needed unless employer formally requests report. |
Register with Burnbrae Medical Practice
The current joining page says permanent registration requires a registration form and can be done online or by downloading a form and emailing it to the practice. It also says you should not be delayed or refused if you cannot provide identification or proof of address, and primary care in Scotland is free to access.
If not, temporary registration may be more appropriate.
The older page says Burnbrae covers Shotts and Newmains, including Dykehead, Stane, Torbothie, Springhill, Allanton, Hartwood, Bonkle and Cambusnethan.
The older page says Burnbrae does not accept patients residing in Harthill, Salsburgh, Cleland, Waterloo, Overtown, Bogside or Wishaw.
Use online registration or download the correct 16+ / 0–15 form and email it to the practice or hand it in.
Registration PDF asks new patients to bring a repeat prescription slip or current medication list and says the practice may arrange a Surgery POD health check.
Services that may save a GP appointment
The official services page lists practical routes such as test results, fit notes, travel, immunisations, healthy living, self-referral, carers and non-NHS services.

Some requests are private work and may be charged. Burnbrae’s older clinics/services page lists example prices, while the current services page says patients will be advised of charges before requests are carried out.
