Start here: match the task to the correct Cramond route

You need Best first step Important detail
Life-threatening emergency Call 999. Do not wait for reception or NHS 24.
Routine GP appointment Book ahead by phone, or try the 8am/2pm release times. Routine GP appointments can be booked up to 4 weeks ahead.
Urgent GP problem today Call reception and say clearly that the problem cannot wait. You can be added to the duty-doctor triage list for that day.
Practice nurse appointment Call reception. The medical administrator asks what the appointment is for so the correct slot is booked.
Repeat medicine Order online, in person, by post, during the prescription phone hour or through an arranged pharmacy service. Allow 2 full working days.
Medicine not on your repeat list Contact reception. The current prescription page says the online repeat form should not be used for a non-repeat medicine.
GP-requested test result Call reception between 2pm and 4pm on a working day. Hospital-requested tests should be followed up with the hospital team.
Home visit Call before 10am where possible. Home visits are for patients who are housebound or too ill to attend.
Wound, clips/sutures or ear irrigation Use NHS Lothian CTAC. These procedures are no longer routinely carried out at Cramond Medical Practice itself.
Urgent help when closed Call NHS 24 on 111. Use 999 instead for a life-threatening emergency.

Cramond Medical Practice opening and telephone hours

Access Published time Practical meaning
Monday 8:00am–6:00pm Normal NHS 24 listed weekday opening.
Tuesday 8:00am–6:00pm Extended-hour appointments may also be offered on some Tuesday mornings.
Wednesday 8:00am–1:00pm and 2:00pm–6:00pm NHS 24 specifically lists the practice as closed 1pm–2pm on Wednesday.
Thursday 8:00am–6:00pm Normal NHS 24 listed weekday opening.
Friday 8:00am–6:00pm Plan repeat medication before weekend closures.
GP appointment phone line 8:00am–1:00pm and 2:00pm–6:00pm, Mon–Fri This is the appointment booking line availability published by the practice.
Saturday / Sunday Closed Use NHS 24 on 111 for urgent out-of-hours care.
Why the hours can look inconsistent online: NHS 24’s current February 2026 listing describes normal public opening as 8am–6pm Monday to Friday with a Wednesday 1pm–2pm closure. Cramond’s appointment page separately says the booking phone line is open 8am–1pm and 2pm–6pm Monday–Friday. This guide treats those as two different access details rather than assuming the building and phone line are identical.

GP appointments: the 8am and 2pm system

Cramond currently uses a mixed appointment model rather than an “online first” system.

1
Book planned care up to 4 weeks ahead.
Routine GP appointments can be booked in advance when suitable slots are available.
2
Try at 8am or 2pm for newly released routine slots.
The practice releases a limited number of face-to-face and telephone appointments at both times. These are booked by phoning reception and are offered first come, first served.
3
If the problem cannot wait, say so.
The medical administrator can add an urgent request to the duty-doctor triage list for that day.
4
Wait for the duty-doctor decision.
The doctor may arrange an appointment, the administration team may call with the next step, or the doctor may decide the problem is safe to manage through a routine appointment.
8am and 2pm slots are not guaranteed. The practice says the number released each day changes according to clinical workload, training, home visits, care-home visits, staff absence and other GP responsibilities.

Telephone or face-to-face?

Cramond offers both. Reception asks for a short description because some problems cannot safely be dealt with by telephone.

More than one problem?

The practice asks patients to discuss the most important problem first. A second issue may require another appointment if there is not enough time to deal with both safely.

Practice nurse

Phone 0131 336 5432. The medical administrator asks what the nurse appointment is for and then books the appropriate type of slot.

Tuesday and Wednesday early appointments

The official opening-hours page says some appointments are offered outside normal core hours on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings for patients who cannot attend during standard surgery hours. Availability depends on the individual doctor’s schedule.

Online appointment booking exists, but availability is limited

Cramond now provides a limited number of GP appointments that registered patients can book online.

1
Ask reception for registration details.
The practice says patients need a registration letter containing the PIN and codes required to activate online appointment booking.
2
Use online booking for available routine slots.
It is not presented as the only appointment route and does not replace urgent duty-doctor triage.
3
Cancel appointments you no longer need.
The practice’s online service also supports cancelling booked routine GP appointments.
No Accurx/PATCHS claim on this page: Cramond’s live 2026 information describes its own registered online appointment service rather than the Accurx, PATCHS or eConsult workflows used by some other UK GP surgeries.

Which professional or service may be more appropriate?

GP

Use for medical problems needing GP assessment, urgent duty-doctor review, referrals or complex ongoing issues.

Practice nurse

Practice nurses provide long-term-condition reviews and services such as cervical screening, family planning, blood-pressure checks and other nursing care.

Community pharmacy

Pharmacy First Scotland can manage many minor illnesses without a GP appointment.

CTAC

NHS Lothian’s Community Treatment and Care service now handles several procedures that are no longer carried out inside the GP practice.

Home visits: request before 10am

If you are housebound or too ill to attend Cramond Medical Practice, the practice asks you to phone reception before 10:00am where possible.

A GP decides whether a home visit is medically required and how urgently it is needed. Reception asks for brief details so the doctor can assess the request appropriately.

A particular GP cannot always be guaranteed. Home visits have to fit around surgery work, urgent duty-doctor responsibilities, care-home work and other clinical commitments.

A community nurse may also visit at home following GP referral. Health visitors may have separate home-visiting responsibilities for families with young children.

Repeat prescriptions: allow 2 full working days

The practice’s prescription page was reviewed in January 2026 and lists several ways to order repeat medicines.

Ordering route Current Cramond guidance
Online Use the practice’s online repeat-prescription service for medicines already on your repeat list.
In person Hand your repeat form to reception with the medicines you need clearly marked.
Post Send the repeat form to the practice; include a stamped addressed envelope if a paper reply is needed.
Telephone The practice currently accepts repeat ordering by phone between 11:00am and 12:00pm on 0131 336 5432.
Local pharmacy Some pharmacies offer repeat-ordering and/or prescription collection services. Arrange this with the pharmacy and practice.
Processing time Allow 2 full working days, excluding weekends and bank holidays.
Medicine not on your repeat list? The January 2026 practice guidance says not to put it through the repeat-prescription form. Contact reception; Cramond currently advises arranging a telephone GP appointment for a medication request that is not an authorised repeat.

Medication reviews

Patients receiving repeat medication may be asked to attend a regular review. The practice says it will contact you when a review is required.

Unused medicine

Return unwanted or old medicines to a pharmacy or the surgery rather than putting them in household waste or flushing them down the toilet.

Test results: call 2pm–4pm for practice-requested tests

Cramond makes an important distinction between investigations requested by the GP practice and those requested by hospital teams.

1
If Cramond requested the test:
Call reception between 2:00pm and 4:00pm on a working day to ask whether the result is available and whether you need to speak with a doctor again.
2
If the hospital requested it:
The practice says hospital colleagues are responsible for providing those results. NHS Lothian’s hospital switchboard is 0131 537 1000.
3
Respect confidentiality.
Results are normally given only to the patient aged 16 or over unless prior written permission or another appropriate exception applies.
Bringing a specimen? If a doctor or nurse has asked you to submit a sample, Cramond says it must reach reception before 3:00pm on a working day so it can meet the final laboratory van collection.

Register with Cramond Medical Practice

Cramond says it is happy to register new patients who live inside its practice boundary. Check the boundary before completing paperwork.

1
Check your address.
Use the practice boundary map or NHS Lothian’s GP boundary tool rather than assuming the nearest surgery must accept your postcode.
2
Complete the registration form and patient questionnaire.
Cramond also publishes a separate questionnaire for children under 6.
3
Take the forms to the surgery.
The practice page currently asks patients aged 16+ to bring two forms of identification, including one photographic document.
4
The GP reviews the application.
You may be invited to a new-patient health check, although the practice says not every new patient requires one.
Important NHS Scotland context: the practice’s own page asks for identification, but current NHS Scotland guidance says identification and proof of address are recommended to help match your existing NHS record and that registration should not be delayed or refused simply because you cannot provide them. If documents are difficult for you to provide, speak to reception.
Staying locally for less than 3 months? NHS Scotland normally treats this as temporary-resident care rather than permanent GP registration.

CTAC now handles several procedures outside the GP practice

Cramond’s July 2026 homepage says all wound care, suture and clip removal, Doppler assessments, ear irrigation and vaccinations are carried out through CTAC rather than at the practice.

You can self-refer for

  • new wounds, including post-operative wounds;
  • suture or clip removal, including after hip or knee surgery;
  • ear irrigation.

CTAC telephone: 0300 790 6296.

Practice referral / vaccination

Cramond says it makes the CTAC referral if you need a Doppler assessment.

Vaccination invitations come with a date, location and rescheduling information. Questions about those appointments should also go to the community vaccination service rather than Cramond reception.

Do not book a GP appointment just for a service that CTAC now provides. Using the dedicated route can avoid an unnecessary surgery call and gets you to the team actually delivering the procedure.

Pharmacy First Scotland: use a pharmacy for suitable minor illness

Cramond actively signposts patients to NHS Pharmacy First Scotland. For many minor illnesses, a community pharmacy should be the first place you ask for advice.

No routine appointment needed

You can normally walk into a participating community pharmacy and ask for Pharmacy First advice.

Advice and treatment

The pharmacist can assess the problem, provide advice and offer NHS treatment where the scheme and your condition allow it.

Pharmacy First Plus

Some pharmacies have an independent prescriber who can treat additional common clinical conditions. Cramond advises checking whether the pharmacy offers this enhanced service and when it is available.

Useful Cramond-specific clinics and patient routes

Monthly MSK clinic

The practice began a monthly MSK clinic trial in May 2026 for selected shoulder, elbow, wrist/hand, foot/ankle, hip, knee and sports-injury problems. Contact reception or ask your GP about referral.

Mental health nurse

The current staff page lists specialist mental-health nurse Jen Opara, who can support patients aged 14+ with mental health conditions, stress, distress and life events through telephone or face-to-face consultations.

Long-term conditions

Practice nurses provide care for conditions including asthma and diabetes, together with blood-pressure checks, healthy-living advice and other nursing care.

Contraception clinic

The practice publishes a monthly clinic for coil and implant fitting/removal. Coil fitting starts with a telephone assessment with a nurse; implants can be booked into the clinic.

Pregnancy

The practice says a positive home pregnancy test does not require a GP appointment simply to enter routine maternity care; local NHS maternity self-referral arrangements apply.

Travel vaccinations

Cramond’s clinics page says it no longer provides travel assessments at the practice. Use the current NHS Scotland travel-health route instead of booking a standard GP appointment for this purpose.

Interpreter, communication and physical-access planning

Cramond’s appointment page asks patients to tell reception if they:

  • want a particular doctor, nurse or health professional where possible;
  • prefer telephone or face-to-face consultation;
  • need an interpreter;
  • have another communication or access need.
For physical access, confirm what you specifically need before travelling. The current main practice pages retrieved for this review do not provide enough detailed, recently reviewed information to safely promise individual building features such as a particular entrance width, accessible toilet setup or parking-space availability. Reception can confirm arrangements relevant to your visit.

Complaints and feedback

Cramond’s current complaints page links its formal 2025 complaints procedure and says the practice takes concerns seriously and investigates concerns brought to its attention.

The practice privacy information also directs patients with concerns about the handling of their information to the Practice Manager on 0131 336 5432.

Does Cramond Medical Practice have a CQC rating?

No English CQC GP rating should be attached to Cramond Medical Practice. Cramond is an NHS Scotland GP practice in Edinburgh. The Care Quality Commission rates health and social-care providers in England, not Scottish GP practices.
