2. Rapid Health routing Your answers help identify the appropriate clinician and timeframe.
✓3. Next step Advice, appointment, clinician review or another service.
Important September 2026 change: older Northgate pages still mention eConsult and telephone-only doctor booking. The practice’s newer Contact Us Online page states that Rapid Health replaced eConsult from mid-September 2026 for patients aged 16+ with a new medical problem. This article uses Rapid Health as the current route.

Start with the task you need to complete

Northgate’s new Rapid Health system changes the route for many new medical problems, but prescriptions, test results, registration and branch services still use their own processes.

You need Best first route What happens next

For general NHS GP processes beyond Northgate’s local rules, see the NHS medical practice patient guide.

Rapid Health: Northgate’s new appointment system

Northgate says Rapid Health replaced eConsult from mid-September 2026. The current instruction specifically applies to patients aged 16 and over with a new medical problem.

1
Open Rapid Health from the Northgate website.
Use it during core opening hours, Monday to Friday 8:00am–6:30pm, excluding bank holidays.
2
Complete the questions about the problem.
The system uses your answers to identify the most appropriate professional and a timeframe based on clinical need.
3
Review the options offered.
Depending on the request, you may receive self-care information, be directed to another service, have the request reviewed by a clinician or be offered an appointment.
4
Use the admin route for non-medical tasks.
Northgate says Rapid Health can also handle requests such as fit notes, letters and other administrative queries.
Cannot use the internet? Northgate explicitly says to contact the surgery. A member of staff can complete the Rapid Health questionnaire on your behalf.
Child under 16? The current Rapid Health announcement specifically says patients aged 16 and over with new medical problems should use the system. For a younger patient, contact the practice to confirm the correct route rather than assuming the adult process applies.

Rapid Health, phone, prescription route or NHS 111?

Rapid Health

New medical problem for a patient aged 16+, suitable admin requests, and online routing during weekday core hours.

Phone the practice

No internet access, child-route questions, urgent surgery queries, branch questions, access requirements or anything that cannot safely wait online.

Prescription route

Routine repeat medicine should use NHS App/NHS account or the Northgate prescription system, not a generic appointment request.

NHS 111

Urgent non-life-threatening help when the surgery is closed or when you are unsure which urgent NHS service is appropriate.

Appointment information: use the newest workflow first

An older Northgate appointment page still says doctor appointments can only be booked by telephone. That page predates the September 2026 Rapid Health change, so patients aged 16+ with a new medical problem should now follow the newer Rapid Health instructions.

Continuity with your usual GP

The older appointment guidance says Northgate encourages patients to see their usual GP where possible. If that GP is unavailable, another GP or specialist-training GP may be offered.

Advance appointments

The practice says some appointments are available in advance, but the number varies with staffing, leave, public holidays and demand.

Do not rely on legacy “telephone only” wording. Northgate’s newer September 2026 Rapid Health page is the more relevant source for current access to new medical-problem appointments.

Repeat prescriptions: allow three working days

The current Northgate prescription page says repeat requests take 72 hours / three working days. It also says requests received after 3pm are handled from the next working day.

Prescription task Current Northgate guidance
Routine repeat medicine Use NHS App/NHS account or another approved practice route.
Processing time Allow 72 hours / three working days. Some requests may take longer.
Phone request Northgate does not accept routine repeat-prescription requests over the telephone.
Order early The practice accepts requests up to two weeks before you are due to run out.
Going away Add your travel dates if you need enough medication to cover the trip.
Nominated pharmacy Electronic prescriptions can be sent to your chosen pharmacy.
Why some older Northgate text says two working days: legacy practice pages still contain an older two-day instruction. The current dedicated repeat-prescription page says three working days, so use the newer timescale when planning your medicine.

For broader help with NHS App requests, medication reviews and urgent medicine problems, see the NHS medication and prescription guide.

Test results: use the newer after-2pm phone guidance

Northgate’s newer Test Results page says you can check reviewed results through the NHS App/NHS account, online services, or telephone 01227 208556 after 2pm.

Result issue What Northgate says
Blood tests Most take at least a week to come through.
X-ray / MRI / CT Radiology results can take longer.
Online access Reviewed results can be checked through NHS App/NHS account or online services.
Telephone The newer dedicated result page says to call after 2pm.
Confidentiality Results are normally given only to the person they relate to unless appropriate permission or another relevant circumstance applies.
Another older Northgate results page says after 10am. The newer dedicated Test Results page says after 2pm. To reduce the chance of a wasted call, this guide uses the newer after-2pm instruction.

Register with Northgate Medical Practice

Northgate provides an online boundary checker and registration process. Its registration page also says it accepts patients outside the normal catchment area.

1
Enter your postcode in the practice boundary checker.
The website then directs you into the registration process.
2
Complete the online registration information.
Include your full address carefully, including house name, flat, apartment or room number where relevant.
3
Stay registered with your existing GP until Northgate confirms.
The practice specifically warns that submitting the application does not immediately transfer your registration.
4
Do not treat an automated five-day message as Northgate’s processing deadline.
The practice says the standard NHS England message refers to forwarding the application to the surgery and does not guarantee how quickly Northgate will complete registration.

Outside the catchment

Northgate says it does accept patients outside its catchment area. Ask the practice how out-of-area registration affects home visits and community services before choosing this option.

Temporary patient

The practice describes temporary registration for up to three months for eligible people who are away from home but want to remain registered with their permanent GP.

For comparison with another Kent practice using a different digital-access model, see the Thornhills Medical Practice patient guide.

Blean and Chartham dispensing services

Northgate’s prescription information says the practice has dispensing facilities at its branch surgeries for eligible local residents.

Blean Surgery

The practice says Blean dispensing is available for eligible residents of Blean and Rough Common.

Chartham Surgery

The practice says dispensing facilities are available at Chartham Surgery for eligible local patients.

Dispensing eligibility is not the same as ordinary pharmacy choice. Ask the branch to confirm whether you qualify before relying on surgery dispensing.

Specialist clinics and services at Northgate

The current practice services page lists a broader range of clinics than many standard GP surgeries.

ENT and audiology

Northgate lists specialist ear, nose and throat and audiology clinics.

Dermatology

A specialist dermatology clinic is listed among current services.

Minor operations

The practice lists minor-operations services.

Family planning

Services include specialist contraception advice, coil fitting and contraceptive implants.

Physiotherapy

Same-day physiotherapy is listed among specialist clinics.

Monitoring

Services include anticoagulation, 24-hour ECG and 24-hour blood-pressure monitoring.
